American Model Trains Made In America

There has been so much talk about America’s ability to compete in the World Market today.  About how other countries can make any product better than what can be made in this country.  How there are no manufacturers of American products that compete with the products of other countries.  When scale railroad enthusiasts hear such talk they find themselves smiling or actually laughing out loud.  They know how false such talk is when it comes to American model trains and they have the railroads to prove it.

While there is no doubt that miniature railroads from other countries have made a name for themselves among railroad enthusiasts in this country, their names and products still are taking a back seat to many of the railroads designed and manufactured in this country.  It isn’t Patriotism, that keeps these railroad enthusiasts purchasing the scale railroads carrying American names, it is the realistic detail, the quality of the product and the history of the trains themselves that keep these enthusiasts buying these railroads.

Talk to any scale railroad collector and they will tell you that their hobby started when as a young boy, or girl they awoke on Christmas morning to find a Lionel or American Flyer under the tree.  They will recount to you every detail of every car that first miniature railroad had.  Many can tell you the exact history of the companies that made these railroads and the improvements that have come and gone over the years.  You will hear them mention such names as the B & O, the Sante Fe and other well known Railroads of the past.

They will probably invite you into their train room and show you the world they created from these scale railroads.  They will show you the stock yards, the towns and villages and their favorite engine.  They will show you each car, tell you exactly when they bought it and show you the fine detail that went into every piece.

These railroad enthusiasts will tell you about the history of how Lionel and American Flyer started out as two individual and competing companies and now part of one and the same company while keeping their own individual railroads and cars separate.  They will tell you how Atlas got it’s start and how it grew.

They will patiently explain to you how Bachmann manufactured such high quality trains that when they decide to sell their business a Chinese company clamored to purchase it, because they knew a high quality product when they saw one.

These railroad enthusiasts will tell you of their search for some of the older rolling stock and accessories that they want or need to make their railroads complete.  They will tell you exactly why with so many other countries manufacturing model railroads they still prefer the American model trains over all the others.

American manufacturers may be losing out when it comes to manufacturing vacuums and clothing, but when it comes to manufacturing scale railroads and their accessories American model trains can hold their own.
