Model Steam Trains Are Fun & Realistic

Model Steam Trains

Model trains are fun, and no one can deny that!  The one issue that you must take into consideration, however, is what train type you want to run.  There are quite a few different types, and even though they are just models, people have some rather heated opinions regarding those models.  There are three basic types of model trains.  These types are model steam trains, model electric trains, and DCC controlled trains.

The electric trains are popular among children because they can be controlled by remote.  In other words you can make them switch tracks, you can make them stop, go forward, or go backwards.  It is every child’s dream to be able to control a train, although this train type does get a bit tedious at times because that it can mysteriously derail if you play with it too much.  In spite of this, electric is a terrific way to introduce a child to the world of model trains.

What if you want to go for something a little bit different?  What if you would choose to have something realistic that will stand out.  Your best bet would be to go with model steam trains, as they have the capability to give off a realistic steam and rustic look.  These are a bit more work, and in most cases they cannot be directly controlled, but that does not mean they are not worth having.

Because they are so realistic, you can always create  impressive scenery to go with them.  For instance, you could make a neat, rustic, scene that stretches out and across your benchwork.  You can have rivers, streams, or just about anything else you desire.  If you prefer, you could create a town, frozen in time, plus bear witness to all of your friends and family.

Model Steam Trains

There are two major types of model steam trains.  There is one type, which works on pellets.  These pellets loaded into the model train, dissolved by water, and once  completed, they will give off steam.  This steam in turn, keeps the train powered.  This is an example of a model train powered by steam, but there are some trains that only give off an illusion.

There is nothing wrong with an electric train that emits steam.  It still gives off the same realistic effect, and you have more control over its movements.  This is something preferred by many, simply because they do not have to sit and wait for the train to come by when they want to do something with it.  There are many choices to make, and whatever you choose, you are certain to have fun as you dive into the world of model trains.

Model Train Track Between Gauge & Scale

Model Train Track Between Gauge & Scale

Model trains are a favorite past time of many, and they certainly are not a new thing.  In fact, the model train has been around for well over one hundred years, and more than a few problems have been an experience in that time.  For one thing, there was a short time when it was utterly impossible for modelers to interchange their parts.  Luckily there finally came a time, or more of a mandate that caused the model train parts eventually to become interchangeable.  This was incredibly helpful, and suddenly parts for the model train track were more readily available.

One issue that you need to understand is that there are different sizes of track for the different train gauges.  The gauges go from the N scale to the G scale.  The N scale, being the smallest, and the G scale being the largest.  When you are buying track for the first time, you will need to ask the store attendants what track type you should use.

The first example of the model train track is the straight track.  This is truly standard, and it comes in two varieties.  There is the standard straight track, and then there is the flexi track.  The Straight track cannot be moved about and extremely rigid.  The flexi track then again, can be moved around and formed into anything you see fit.  If you do not like it to be a straight track, then you can use any of the other alternatives.

The curved track can be used for turns, and there are many other types of track that you can use.  There are also crossings and turnouts that can be used.  Turnouts will help the train to transition itself onto other tracks, which is a rather needed function.  On the subject of functions, there is function track, which used, for various purposes.  These will work well with DCC controlled trains as they can be highly customized.

As you can see, the model train track can become particularly complicated at times.  In fact, a beginner might find themselves extremely confused.  If you find yourself in such a position, do not worry too much,  it has happened to other people who are just starting to find their way in the model train world.  After all, it is only natural that it would all seem incredibly complicated!
