The LGB Model Trains Company started making its model trains in 1881. The initial of this company stands for Lehmann Gross Bhann which means Lehmann’s Big Train. Big it is, since it is 4 times the size of the HO scale. These larger model trains are enjoyable as a first model train railroader for young children. The larger scale makes it easier for little hands to connect the track, handle the locomotives, and cars. There is no doubt that children love these monsters of the model train railroad hobby. The appearance of model train railroading has been over 100 years ago. The world has seen many companies that manufactured these ultimate toys, come, and go. While a few of the bigger names seem to continue to thrive or at least hang on through the surging and waning interests of miniature railroad building, other companies have enjoyed, but a brief moment in the sunlight and then forever gone, forgotten. However, there is one model train manufacturer that survived for over 50 years, earning an excellent reputation and competing in the world market before going under forever. This company, Lima Model Trains, still have its fans today and some of the cars from this vintage railroad demand a high price on the market for those collectors seeking to add to their collections.
Lima Model Trains founded in 1946 to manufacture parts for the real Italian State Railway. However, its usefulness as parts manufacturing cut short when the Italian Railway decided to produce its own parts leaving the company without a contract or a product to produce.
In 1948 Lima Model Trains switched its aluminum casting capabilities and its attention to the building of toy boats, cars and trains. In 1953, the miniature railroads produced by this company considered quite primitive and little more than toys for young children. However, by 1962 the quality of their product had improved to such an extent that they began competing with models from France and Germany and a few other companies.
Lima Model Trains
By the early 1970s, Lima Model Train had broken into the world market selling in the United Kingdom, United States, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and South Africa as well as Australian and Scandinavian markets.
In less than thirty years this company became one of the best selling scale model railroad manufacturers in the world. Their success seemed almost assured, but such was not the case. Financial difficulties began to befall the company, and in an effort to continue to manufacture. They spent the next several years consolidating and merging with a number of other companies, but the end these consolidations failed and the company ceased forever in 2004.
Hornsby International purchased much of the companies tooling and designs and under their name produces some of the same miniature railroad products. It is not the same. Those who loved the original Lima train company and its products remain loyal. Many are hoarding their scale model railroads and still running them today. Other collectors who loved this model train spend hours each year searching for additions for their Lima trains, and hoping that individuals selling a car, locomotive or an entire set that they can add to their railroads.
While the company was thriving on many of these items, they are highly sought after collectors’ items, due to the small production orders of these Lima trains. It is these collectors and their love for this scale railroad manufacturer that will keep the name of Lima Model Trains alive for many generations to come.

When most people think of miniature railroads, they think of young children gathered around the Christmas tree on Christmas morning. Their eyes wide open with wonder and excitement as they see a new shining train chugging round and round. However, the reality is that most model railroad enthusiasts are males over 40 who have reached a point in their economic life where they can indulge in, what has become an expensive hobby. American model train collectors and enthusiasts spend over 500 million a year on this hobby.
While some of these miniature railroad fans, consider buying the latest that the miniature railroad industry has to offer, others prefer to stick with certain age old models they were first introduced as children. One of the favorites of these model railroads is the American Flyer Model Trains.
American Flyer Model Trains first began in 1907 and through out the years struggled, and succeeded, but struggling some more before finally giving up the ghost in 1967 and selling to the Lionel Company. During its run, especially the years this company was running by A.C. Gilbert this company boomed and flourished producing high-quality trains that drove one model railroad company out of business and gave the well known Lionel Model Train Company its stiffest competition.
American Flyer Model Trains
American Flyer Model Train characterized by their outstanding operating accessories, their realistic sounds, and their smoking steamers. What they would become known for being there S model locomotives, cars and tracks. While other miniature railroad manufactures were making a name for themselves in model trains such as the O, HO and N track. Gilbert turned his attention to a train that was smaller than the O, which many model railroad builders found too large for their desires. The making of a 1/16 scale which was half the size of O models, but still had the heft miniature railroading fans liked.
Though he was not the first manufacturer to make these model railroads, his locomotives and rolling stock were of such exceptional quality that this model was soon associated with the American Flyer name almost exclusively.
American Flyer Model Train vs. Lionel
In its heyday, American Flyer Model Trains offered the only real, noteworthy competition to the Lionel Company. For several years in the early 1920s, Gilbert’s company fought competitively against this model railroad giant to become king of the miniature railroad world in the United States. This competition fueled by loyal fans of both companies; each claiming the railroad manufacturer of their choice made the finest cars and accessories ever produced in the model railroad world.
Ironically, for a brief time in the late 1920s Lionel and Gilbert’s company became partners buying out and manufacturing parts for the Ives railroad that has-been forced out of business by its competition with American Flyer.
This partnership ended and in 1967 Lionel would then buy out the failing Gilbert name and tooling for this once admired miniature railroad.
Lionel still today manufactures the S scale model trains that made the American Flyer Model Trains name famous. It is perhaps a tribute from the miniature railroad giant to the company that once gave them a run for their money.

As a lad of just 16, Stephan Schaffan Jr would accompany his father to the local hobby shop when his father was working on his newest model plane to get supplies. Stephan had less interest in planes, however, then in gaining employment and would frequently hound the owner of the hobby shop for a job. Fed up with Stephan’s frequent requests the owner finally gave the young man some track and told him to try and improve it. Stephan did. Soon the owner was asking Stephan to make other improvements. It soon became apparent to both Stephan Sr. and his son that they could make a business out of manufacturing train track. Thus, the beginning of Atlas model train company.
From its very inception 1949, Atlas became known for making the finest flexible track of any model train company. Unlike the flexible track of these other companies, that would often kink with repeated bending. This company’s track could be bent multiple times without kinking or breaking. This meant that hobbyist using flexible track for spiral easement curves could re bend the track; as many times as he needed until they got the curve exactly as he wanted it.

As the company grew, it began adding and manufacturing other model railroad accessories to their line of track. Soon they were making locomotives, cabooses and all the rolling stock as well as buildings, people and even livestock. Lionel Cowen looked for a way to draw attention to the luxury of train cars. Striking upon the objective of designing a model train that would show off the advantages of train travel. When placed in a store window it did draw attention but, not for the reason Cowen intended. People showed little interest in real trains, but many fascinated by this miniature train and began asking where they could purchase it. These inquires and the enthusiastic response people showed to that little toy train convinced Cowen that he had a marketable product on his hands. The beginning of Lionel Model Train company.
Model train building has been around for over a century now and through out the years enthusiasm for these toys has surged and waned but never completely died out. Seeing the continued success of the Lionel company other manufactures have tried their hand at building miniature railroad products. While some have survived, and even prospered where others have failed. Through it all, Lionel has set the standard for these trains.
The success of Lionel Model Trains when Lionel Cowen built that first model train he paid close attention to every detail to make it as realistic as possible. Once he began making miniature railroads he determined that every piece that bore his name had the same realistic detail. This eye for detail combined with the public’s romance with trains combined to make this company an ongoing success.
One of the first railroad accessories made by this company was an outhouse, which was, at that time a common feature in most rural areas. This outhouse was so finely detailed that it looked as though its been constructed from scrap lumber. It even had a perfect half moon cut into the door.
